Second Movement, Allegretto - Symphony No. 7 by Beethoven
The Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92, is musical work in four movements composed by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 – 1827). At the premiere, Beethoven conducted and was noted as remarking that it was one of his best works. The second movement Allegretto was encored. The popularity of the Symphony resulted in the three repeat performances during the following ten weeks and the instant popularity of the Allegretto resulted in frequent performances separate from the full Symphony.
Beethoven started writing the 7th Symphony in 1811 while he was visiting the Bohemian spa town of Teplice for health reasons. It was completed in 1812 and dedicated to Count Moritz von Fries. It premiered in Vienna at a charity concert on December 8, 1813. The Allegretto has been used in a number of movies, most notably in "The King's Speech" (2010) during the 5 minute scene "Speaking Unto Nations".
The Symphony is composed in four parts or movements. Instrumentation for the Allegretto is sparse, requiring few musicians and only a pair of each of the following instruments; flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, and a tympani plus a string section.
